Driving in the United Arab Emirates as a visitor
Does our International Driving Document help here?
Only as an extra. Authorities in the United Arab Emirates expect an official IDP or an official translation, which our document does not replace. Get the official permit first; you can carry our translation alongside it.

Which documents visitors need
Visitors holding a licence from a country on the UAE’s approved list, including the US, UK, Canada and most of Europe, can drive on a visit visa. Others need an International Driving Permit.
In the United Arab Emirates, both the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions apply, so IDPs issued under either are recognised.
Good to know before you drive
Speed cameras are everywhere; fines are linked to the rental car and charged to your card.
There is zero tolerance for alcohol for all drivers.
Dubai’s Salik toll gates charge automatically, and rental companies add the fees to your bill.
