Driving in Portugal as a visitor

Translation usefulFacts last checked October 13, 2026

Does our International Driving Document help here?

Yes, as a companion to your licence. Foreign licences are generally accepted in Portugal, and a translation makes yours readable at rental desks and roadside checks, especially if it isn’t in the local language.

Which documents visitors need

Visitors can generally drive on a valid foreign licence for a limited period. An IDP is recommended for licences from outside the EU, and some rental companies require one.

In Portugal, both the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions apply, so IDPs issued under either are recognised.

Good to know before you drive

  • Many motorways use electronic tolls only; ask your rental company for a toll transponder.

  • Using a phone while driving is banned unless it is hands-free.

  • Some former SCUT motorways have electronic-only tolls; unpaid tolls are billed to the rental company and then to you.
