Driving in Spain as a visitor
Official IDP expectedFacts last checked October 13, 2026
Which documents visitors need
Visitors with licences from outside the EU and EEA are generally expected to carry an International Driving Permit with their licence, and rental companies often ask for one.
In Spain, both the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions apply, so IDPs issued under either are recognised.
Does our International Driving Document help here?
Only as an extra. Authorities in Spain expect an official IDP or an official translation, which our document does not replace. Get the official permit first; you can carry our translation alongside it.
