Driving in the United Kingdom as a visitor
Does our International Driving Document help here?
Yes, as a companion to your licence. Foreign licences are generally accepted in the United Kingdom, and a translation makes yours readable at rental desks and roadside checks, especially if it isn’t in the local language.

Which documents visitors need
Visitors can drive on a valid foreign licence for up to 12 months. If your licence isn’t in English, carry an IDP or a translation, which rental companies often ask for.
In the United Kingdom, both the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions apply, so IDPs issued under either are recognised.
Good to know before you drive
Roundabouts run clockwise; give way to traffic coming from the right.
Central London charges a daily Congestion Charge, and the ULEZ applies to older vehicles.
Speed limits and road-sign distances are in miles, not kilometres.
