Driving in Turkey as a visitor
Translation usefulFacts last checked October 13, 2026
Which documents visitors need
Visitors can drive on a valid foreign licence for up to six months. A translation or IDP is recommended if your licence isn’t in Latin script.
In Turkey, both the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions apply, so IDPs issued under either are recognised.
Does our International Driving Document help here?
Yes, as a companion to your licence. Foreign licences are generally accepted in Turkey, and a translation makes yours readable at rental desks and roadside checks, especially if it isn’t in the local language.
Good to know before you drive
- Motorways and major bridges use the HGS electronic toll system; rental cars usually include it.
- Carry your passport: police document checks are routine.
- Cars must carry two warning triangles, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher; check your rental car has them.
