Driving in Thailand as a visitor
Official IDP expectedFacts last checked October 13, 2026
Which documents visitors need
Thailand expects visitors to carry an International Driving Permit with their licence; licences from other ASEAN countries are recognised. Police checkpoints regularly check tourists, especially on scooters.
In Thailand, both the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions apply, so IDPs issued under either are recognised.
Does our International Driving Document help here?
Only as an extra. Authorities in Thailand expect an official IDP or an official translation, which our document does not replace. Get the official permit first; you can carry our translation alongside it.
