Driving in South Korea as a visitor

Translation not acceptedFacts last checked October 13, 2026

Which documents visitors need

South Korea accepts International Driving Permits issued by countries that signed the 1949 or 1968 conventions. Without one you need a Korean licence.

In South Korea, both the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions apply, so IDPs issued under either are recognised.

Does our International Driving Document help here?

No. Only official permits or a local licence are accepted in South Korea, so our translation won’t make you legal to drive. Arrange the right permit before you travel, or book a car with a driver.

Good to know before you drive

  • Bring your IDP from home; it can’t be issued in Korea.
  • Speed cameras are frequent, and navigation apps warn you about them.
  • Expressways use Hi-pass electronic tolls, and rental cars often come with a Hi-pass card.
